It was three o'clock in the morning and Nadiah was on the porch again. The weed smoke was blowing in the cool November night and she was feeling real mellow. Somehow she had managed to push most of life's stressors out of her head for a few hours in order to focus on her book.

JaQuan was still in there, though. Every two or three minutes she would think about him and his whereabouts. How was he doing? What was he doing? Was he even alive? That was the one question that caused her the most pause. The streets were tough, and she knew in her heart that he was a house boy acting out his rap video fantasies. He was far from prepared to deal with the element of society who made the streets their playground. They could see him coming from a mile away.

Nadiah tossed the thoughts away and started typing again. She reread the last line a few more times before rewriting it. There.

A smile creased her face.

Then her nerves kicked in.

She couldn't believe it. She had just typed the last period of her novel.

Momma's a Virgin was done.

Nadiah leaned back in her chair and stared at the laptop's computer screen. She scrolled down, two hundred and eighty-eight pages.

A rush came over her like never before and she couldn't remember ever feeling this good.

She'd needed this.

Three years of hard work had finally paid off.

Nadiah put the blunt to her mouth but stopped before it touched her lips. She looked at the smoking cigar paper and put it out. There was no way she was going to ruin this real high with a manufactured one. She was no longer a nobody; she was an author.

She ran one last spell check and accepted or denied the changes. She couldn't believe it. This was major. People would read her work. Wait! What if they didn't like it? New nerves kicked in. Oh my God, please let them like it, she thought. Never mind that; she was feeling too good to let her negative thoughts interfere.

Nadiah closed the laptop and thought about another good feeling. Earlier today she'd caught a cab to Crane Academy for Girls in the ritzy section of Dunwoody, where her daughter Nakaria was a first grader. She stood outside the fence and watched as the beautiful little girl ran around on the playground with her friends.

Nadiah stood there watching her child until the bell rang to call the girls back inside. Nakaria lined up with her friends; then, right before she walked inside the building, she turned toward Nadiah and waved.

That one little wave opened up the floodgates. That one wave instilled in her a determination she'd never known existed to get her child back. Oh, how she missed her little girl! Yet as much as she hated to admit it, Raymond, her daughter's father, was the best thing for her at the time. But now things needed to change.

Nakaria was only six years old; therefore Nadiah still had time to become a good mother.
